Good evening or morning, depending on where you're from. Here's my introduction!
My name is Lucas and my username is DoYourWeb. I'm the super-admin of this server, and the owner, as you might guess.
I'll be 32 at the end of this year, and I'm from Belgium, Wallonia (the French-speaking region of Belgium). I work full-time as a sysadmin and I love swimming.
When I was 5 years old, my big brother introduced me to the game Half-Life and I quickly became obsessed. I learned how to tie ties (like the scientists or G-Man) and wear suits. My family still makes playful jokes about that nerdy look today. After Half-Life, I played the Sven Co-op mod for a long time, and then I played Counter-Strike: Source at release (a few months before Half-Life 2). In 2005, the famous mod you all know arrived: Garry's Mod 9.0.4. Hard to believe I'm still enjoying the same game for 20 years. Best investment of my life.
Before the launch of paid Garry's Mod 10 (still the same price today: 10 bucks), there was a server called MelonBrew.com, a password-protected roleplay server. You had to register on their forums to get the password that changed every week. It was a common practice back then. This server ran the map rp_oviscity_b3, which stripped your weapons and physgun once you left spawn, and their gamemode did the rest. Those times left a strong mark on me and inspired me to create the MelonRP.com community.
Around 2009, I discovered TacoNBanana and its Half-Life 2 Roleplay server. This gamemode was less familiar to many of my French friends, so I had a discussion with someone you may know, Kurozael (famously the creator of CloudSixteen) and I invested some hard-earned student cash in his first HL2RP gamemode, "Nexus". Back then we were called DigitalsRP. I have a lot of great memories, though our standards were very high, which limited accessibility, and our Lua skills were still developing, so progress was slower than we wanted. A couple of years later, we moved on.
After that, I started a minigames server originally run by Jo The Schmo (here is a preview). He had stopped his server and I wanted to revive it, but I lost all the backups I’d saved on Megaupload after the forced FBI shutdown and it was over.
Years passed, and during the COVID lockdown I was looking for HL2RP servers and discovered impulse-community's semi-serious HL2RP server. I appreciated its simplicity and how light it was on addons and content. It was later rebranded landis-community for various reasons and kept the same spirit for a while, then the scope expanded and the project eventually concluded. Other projects appeared, like Vanilla-community, which later wound down as well (others based on the impulse framework still exist today). I missed that simplicity, that lightweight content, and that core gameplay. Then one day I discovered the Impulse framework had been published on GitHub, and in my spare time I worked hard to bring that same HL2RP experience back. So here I am with MelonRP.
I'm looking forward to building a community focused on fun, simplicity, and no drama. I wish you joy both in the game and in real life!
Thanks for your time spent reading my introduction. If you have any questions do not hesitate!
